Its name is derived from the Dutch word "kralen" which means "little bay". This bay was a major shipping point and the bay became well known as a port for commerce in ancient times.

In the early Modern Period, it was primarily a fishing harbor. Later on, as tourism grew, it started being used as a resort town. In the late 20th Century, the town became a popular tourist destination with many art galleries, museums, and theatres springing up all over the area.
