What is Alkaline Water and what is Kangen Water?

Is it safe?

What is Kangen Water?

Kangen water is run through a “Kangen Machine”, which uses electrolysis to make alkaline water. Alkaline water is water that has had its acidity reduced. Think high school chemistry with acids and bases- alkaline water is more basic.

Kagan water also claims to benefit from the process of ionization which is really just electrolysis. This means running an electric charge through the water, using the existing minerals in the water to sort it into more acidic, and more alkaline sections.

What Is Alkaline Water?

Using the pH to measure water, alkaline water is what with a pH above a neutral 7 on a scale of 0-14. 1 here would be more acidic and 14 would be more alkaline. Most tap water and bottled water falls in the 6.5 to 7.5 pH range, but the alkaline water that most companies make is between 7.5 and 9.5 pH.

Is Alkaline Water Good for You? Alkaline Water Benefits

There are no studies to provide any evidence that there are significant benefits to drinking alkaline water. There have been many claims around alkaline water improving people's lives, but there has been very little evidence put forward to back these claims.

Examples of claims in alkaline water sales pitches are: weight loss, anti-aging, immune support, hydration, weight loss, helping fight cancer, changing pH of blood, and skin health.

These are bold claims for benefits and, if true, would have the science world clamoring for people to use them. However, there is limited to no evidence for these claims, so it is not. The one claim that appears to have some support is that
alkaline water may help with some acid reflux issues. This at least has a little backing and makes a tiny bit of logical sense, since the alkaline water would, in theory, interact with stomach acids

Alkaline Water Side Effects and Real Water Health Issues

Alkaline water is generally considered safe, but the process by which it is made can concentrate contaminants already present in the water. There are a number of unscrupulous companies trying to cash in on the alkaline water craze, so take that into consideration when drinking it.

Recently, a company called Real Water, which produces alkalized water, was linked to a number of hospitalizations and one death from liver damage. Multiple children were hospitalized with liver failure. Real Water was forced to temporarily shut down operations and recall their product. Do not drink Real Water if you come across it. Remember this case when thinking about buying alkaline water, as there could be other sketchy actors out there.

Is Kangen Water Healthy? Kangen Water Benefits and Side Effects

Being that Kangen water is just alkaline water processed through a kangen machine at home, the evidence for its health claims is the same as we noted above of alkaline water; which are limited if any. Kangen water doesn’t appear to have had any historical issues, like those we found with Real Water, so there don’t appear to be any side effects from the available information.

How do you make Water Alkaline?

There are a number of ways to make water more alkaline. As discussed above, Kangen Machines use electrolysis to make water alkaline. This process separates out water and creates acidic water as a by-product. Another simple way to make water more alkaline is adding basic substances to it. A common example would be adding sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to water.

What is a Kangen Water Machine? What is an Alkaline Water Machine?

A Kangen water machine is a machine that uses electrolysis to separate water into acidic and alkaline components. This makes it an alkaline water machine.

Should I drink Alkaline Water?

Do you have an upset stomach? Do you like spending money you don’t need to? If you answered no, then alkaline water is probably not for you. Unless some research comes in and totally changes the way we look at it, right now alkaline water can be considered a snake oil sales pitch. Promising to do many things, but ultimately not backing up those claims.

Alkaline and Acidic Water for Cleaning

One area where we do support the use of alkaline and acidic water is cleaning. Acid and alkaline water solutions have a number of applications in cleaning around the house. For more information on this please check out this website.
