When I was in Algiers, some of the drivers from the tap water companies came to my hotel and tested the water. They announced to the manager that our water had an alarming odor and color. They were not able to explain the reason for this until we got home. The only thing we could gather from them was that the water smelled like rotten eggs, tasted like sewage and had an indescribable color. After we left the hotel, the manager called me to ask for and estimate of the health risks associated with drinking the water.

The only solution she and the other water company representatives could come up with was to install a carbon block filter in each of our faucets. This is not sufficient. The water should also be tested on a regular basis. That would at least tell us if the water is really contaminated or not. Unfortunately, our government officials do not provide information about such testing.
