There have been some alarming reports over the past few years about water quality and availability in New Zealand. The main culprits appear to be excessive fish farming, poor groundwater management, run-off from urban population growth and the use of untreated or unfiltered tap water. A report released by the Ministry of Business, Skills and Innovation revealed that in 2020 there was a 6% increase in the number of cases where tap water wasn''t safe to drink. It''s an alarming statistic and is likely to be caused by a combination of high population growth, increased use of pesticides and herbicides in farming and the increasing demand for clean drinking water in urban areas. The effects of not investing in quality public health and safety infrastructure have resulted in a situation whereby the quality of our tap water is beginning to suffer.
