In late May 2020, I took a trip to Warsaw, Poland to investigate the quality of tap water in the city. I was invited by an environmental agency to evaluate the Poland Spring water supply. The agency is part of the European Environment Agency. I was invited because my interest in Poland was sparked by my book, "The Great Water Shortage of Warsaw."
My job was to test the samples collected from households in five Polish cities - Cracow, Gdynia, Warsaw, Szczema and Lodz. I also had an opportunity to visit the main residential area of Warsaw. It turned out that the vast majority of people in this area do not have a drinking water purification system installed in their home. The water from their taps contains very high levels of toxins such as lead and chlorine. These substances can be harmful to the human body. They are especially dangerous during the winter when the water pipes tend to freeze and burst, often leaving behind large amounts of ice that can be detrimental
