The Environmental Protection Agency''s (EPA) Region 4, the Southeast Region of the EPA, has found a number of contaminants in tap water in Elizabethtown, Virginia. In an article in the Washington Post, Carol Crosby, an EPA public affairs specialist, states that there are a number of possible sources of contamination and that testing is still ongoing. According to her, there are more than six hundred facilities in the region.

One of the suspected contaminants is benzene, a volatile organic compound that can cause a range of health problems including headaches, dizziness, nausea, stomachaches, vomiting, and even cancer. In addition, the EPA says that a number of chemicals known as cancer-causing agents can be present in the water as well. One of these chemicals, called trihalomethanes, or THMs, have been linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and testicular cancer.
