It is so dangerous that it is banned in many countries around the world. In Bangladesh, a lot of people are getting sick from lead in their drinking water. This can cause serious illnesses and neurological disorders such as stroke.

Drinking tap water in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is not safe. In contrast to the authority who claims that water is drinkable. People are complaining of diarrhea due to contaminated water. The supplier-treated water ends up filthy and stinky due to glitches in the network of the pipeline. Based on the data(WaterAid) in 2018, only 56 percent of Bangladesh’s population have access to safe water.

In research, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council found that 97 percent of the drinking water in jars used mostly in offices and restaurants contains coliform bacteria. Cases reported where WASA water had been directly supplied in pots and sold.

Some say they boil and filter the water before they drink it. However, we recommend only drinking bottled water to ensure your health safety because there are substances that cannot be killed by just boiling. Be cautious and only buy sealed bottled water.

Source of Water in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dhaka Bangladesh heavily relies on groundwater as its primary source. Two other portions come from surface water and rainfall. Pumping water of underground water, causing groundwater levels to drop 200 feet for over the last 50 years

Increasing industrial, domestic, and commercial wastes are polluting the nearest surface water in the city and may show signs of contamination of groundwater in some areas. And due to the growing population, the DWASA is trying to increase supply coming from surface water. However, the Buriganga and Sitalakhya river’s water quality is rapidly deteriorating, and the amount is not sufficient.

The DWASA identified a significant water source, which is about 30 kilometers east of Dhaka, called the Meghna River — planning to serve more than 40 percent of raw water supply to 8 million people with drinking water.
