It seems that with the recent controversy over drinking tap water in Flint, Michigan, and a growing body of evidence linking it to various diseases, most people have been debating the question of how safe is tap water. But for many, the issue of tap water comes down to one factor: Is it contaminated?

Tap water is not regulated by the federal government. In order for it to be classified as safe, it has to pass some very strict tests. It has to meet specific standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But even if the water meets these standards, we still have no idea what is in it, how it gets there, or what happens when we drink it.

Graz, Austria, is a city located in the Austrian Alps. It is home to about 50,000 people who live mainly in the countryside. However, even in the city, many people still drink tap water, since there are a number of private wells.
