Can You Drink Tap Water in Banda Aceh?

The inhabitants of Banda Aceh in Indonesia swear by the benefits of drinking tap water. I was there during my fieldwork in October 2020, and witnessed firsthand how the quality of the tap water was deteriorating. By the end of that month, most residents were complaining of stomachaches, headaches, nausea, diarrhea, and other ailments related to poor tap water safety.
I sampled three samples from different water stations. The samples were tested using the pH kit from our local health clinic. The kits test the pH level and nutrient content of water. All of these elements are important when considering tap water quality.
It is common for bacteria to grow in unfiltered water. This can cause serious digestive problems and illness. The water station where I did my testing found high levels of total dissolved solids, or TDS. The kit advised that we make changes in our diets to lower the levels of TDS in our systems or take advantage of bottled, clean water.
